Democratic Socialist Twit
I’m a bit pressed for time this week, but I wanted to call your attention to a recent tweet by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Ocasio-Cortez is a 28-year-old educator/activist/community organizer (for Bernie Sanders) and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, who has been endorsed by various progressive and civil rights organizations (e.g., BLM, MoveOn) and individuals. In a mid-term upset last month, she beat 10-term incumbent and Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary for New York’s 14th congressional district.
It’s kind of scary how much attention Ocasio-Cortez is getting. But, then, she is a young, attractive, supposedly lower-income, Hispanic female with a strongly Leftist bent, and that plays very well in New York and other “progressive” strongholds. (And with the MSM, of course.) However, from what I’ve heard/read, I’m not sure there’s much substance behind her smile and rhetoric. For example, Daily Wire’s Ryan Saavedra began his recent article:
“Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has said a lot of stupid things.
She claimed that Israel was occupying Palestine and, when pressed, admitted she did not know what she was talking about. She can’t differentiate between socialism and Democratic socialism. She said she is working to flip a congressional seat “red” in November. She admitted that she can’t win by having to persuade people her ideology is the best possible option. Heck, she even thought that a recent parody video that mocked her was a serious attempt to deceive voters.”
Ocasio-Cortez may have topped herself, however, when she tweeted last Thursday:
“The GOP is:
– weak on fighting for working class Americans
– weak on crime
– weak on equal rights
– weak on national security
– weak on rejecting racism
– weak on moral courage
– weak on family values”
SMH…
Clearly, she and her friends in the Democrat and Democratic Socialist parties are afraid of recent actions by congressional Republicans and the Trump administration to appoint pro-life, originalist justices; reduce oppressive and unconstitutional regulations; reduce government bureaucracy; broaden education choices; weaken unions; strengthen our military; drop out or renegotiate nonsensical international agreements; institute sanctions against hostile nations; crack down on illegal immigration, drug dealers, and violent crime; stand up for citizens’ 1st and 2nd Amendment freedoms; etc.
Check out Saavedra’s article for his assessment of her tweet; he has a few good, specific examples to counter her claims. He concludes with:
“Are the Republicans perfect in any of the aforementioned categories? No, but at least those things are a part of their platform, unlike the Democrats.
As for Ocasio-Cortez, the best thing for the electoral chances of the GOP is for her to keep talking and tweeting.”
I hope he’s right.
P.S. Just before going to press, this article with a similar critique by Conservative Tribune’s Cillian Zeal came out, too. He calls the tweet “astonishingly ignorant”. Amen.
