A Shift in the Black Vote

In the 2016 election, only 8% of Black voters supported Donald Trump. That number increased to 12% in 2020. As of a poll taken by Siena College and the New York Times last November, Black support for Trump in six key battleground states so far — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin — was up to 22%. Who would’ve guessed?!
Gallup is reporting on the results of their new data, saying,
“The Democratic Party’s wide lead over Republicans in black Americans’ party preferences has shrunk by nearly 20 points over the past three years.”
Specifically, in 2020 the surveyed Black Americans identified 77% Democrat/leaning Democrat vs. 11% Republican/leaning Republican. But, in 2023, Gallup’s survey showed Black Americans identifying 66% Democrat/leaning Democrat vs. 19% Republican/leaning Republican. That 47-point differential (66-19) is a lot better than the 66-point differential (77-11) of three years ago.
Parker has an idea about why this shift is happening…
“[The New York Times/Siena College Poll] shows that, relative to whites, blacks care more about economic issues than social issues. Sixty-five percent of blacks say economic issues are most important compared to 53% of whites. Twenty-one percent of blacks say social issues are most important compared to 33% of whites.
Perhaps we are entering new times when fewer blacks look to government for social justice and more want economic growth and opportunity.
This means Republicans.”
By itself, this shift won’t fix the problems the GOP has nor necessarily assure a Trump win in 2024. But, it is a welcome trend and will hopefully compensate for some of the changing demographics and the “questionable” votes manufactured by the Left.
